Andrew Cuomo blamed The Post — but HE was the liar and a fraud

On July 24, 2020, Gov. Andrew Cuomo was asked about criticism of his handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes. His response:

“I believe it is a political issue. I think it’s the New York Post, I think it’s Michael Goodwin, I think it’s Bob McManus, I think it’s Fox TV. I think it is all politically motivated. If anybody looked at the facts, they would know that it was wholly absurd on its face. People died in nursing homes. That’s very unfortunate. Just on the top line, we are number 35th in the nation in percentage of deaths in nursing homes. Go talk to 34 other states first. Go talk to the Republican states now. Florida, Texas, Arizona. Ask them what is happening in nursing homes. It’s all politics.”

We now know that New York scored as 35th in the nation only because Cuomo was engaged in a criminal coverup to hide the true numbers.

Months earlier, after The Post began publicizing his March 25 order that forced care homes to accept COVID-contagious patients, his Health Department switched how it reported deaths in those homes to a unique new standard: Residents who died after being sent to a hospital were counted elsewhere, making the homes seem safer than they were.

In early July, state health officials were prepared to share the true numbers (nearly 10,000 nursing-home residents dead) of coronavirus, The Wall Street Journal reports. But Cuomo and his aides scrubbed that number out of the report.

After all, the truth would destroy his entire façade of competent leadership. Didn’t these bureaucrats realize he had a self-congratulatory book to write?

Cuomo lied. He falsified reports and bragged about the false picture those faked reports painted. Then he blamed us, saying we were “politically motivated.”

And his administration spent months stonewalling Freedom of Information requests and legislators’ questions, pretending it needed to check the data before releasing it. After state Attorney General Tish James’ report revealed the true extent of the deaths, he had his top aide tell yet another lie to outraged lawmakers: They’d kept it all secret for fear of persecution from the Trump administration.

In reality, the coverup started months before the feds asked a single question. How stupid does Cuomo think the Legislature is?

By the way: That fat book contract means he profited personally from the coverup, which means he can’t use the “didn’t pocket any cash” loophole that has allowed many corrupt pols to escape federal prosecution.

Now, beset with investigations over nursing homes and sexual harassment, the governor is turning to his regular responses: bullying, filibustering, “wait for the inquiry.” He swears he’s innocent.

Maybe he’ll get away with it: Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said Thursday that three harassment accusers isn’t enough; she won’t call for his resignation until there’s four.

Really? And how many sanctimonious lies about the nursing-home horrors does he have to get caught out in before she’ll speak out — four? 10? 1,000?

At least the Legislature did finally remove (some of) the pandemic-emergency powers that he has also abused. It’s a start, anyway.

And, come on: Cuomo has now proven himself a liar, over and over again — on matters of life and death. How can any New Yorker, lawmaker or common citizen, ever believe a word he says?

Indeed, how can the public possibly trust him to remain in office?
